The land associated with what is now called The Circle Bar Guest Ranch was known as good hunting ground for the Native Americans who made their home here in Judith Basin. Most were members of the Blackfoot Indian Tribe. But by the late 1800s more and more men were traveling here from the East hoping to carve out a piece of land to call their own.

The men who eventually settled here decided it was a perfect place to raise horses and cattle. The entire Judith River Basin was an area well-known for great grasses, hay and wheat production and thus well-suiting for cattle and agriculture. The river and vast open lands also attracted hunters and fishermen.

Back in 1902, The Ranch was not just home to a successful cattle operation, but also a guest house and eatery. It held the name: S Lazy 4 Bar – one of Montana's first registered brands. One of the original ranch structures, our huge Main Barn, was built during that year.

It was 1920 when the name Circle Bar Ranch first appeared and 20 years later, it remained the Circle Bar when purchased by Bill and Ruth Korell. It was Bill's grandfather who befriended a teenager named Charlie Russell, who'd arrived in Montana by stagecoach. Russell spent several years living in a cabin not far from here. He later became Montana's legendary "Cowboy Artist", and the Judith Basin became known as the heart of Russell Country, MT.

The Ranch changed hands several times in the years that followed. Over time The Circle Bar was updated, upgraded, redesigned and renovated. All of the cabins were fitted with fully modern amenities, while keeping their western charm. A beautiful new Main Lodge was added as well as a new Rec Room, Swimming Pool and Indoor Hot Tub and a new Horse Barn.
